Liberty Station NTC Park

I live in the “America’s Finest City” a title we received decades ago and never gave up. I agree with the title as evidenced by the fact I have lived here most of my life. While I may look and even fantasize sometimes about moving to other cities, but they always fall short. I still believe that other cities have much to offer and like visiting them, but at least for the foreseeable future, San Diego is home to me. Ultimately I just think it is about the great many sunny days without the high temperatures that others have to contend with. Anyway, now that the kids are out of school for the summer we thought that we should do explore San Diego.

Today's Mission: meet an old friend and go to a place we haven't been for and it had to be able to be safe and fun for children ranging 3-11 so the moms could actually converse and catch up.

When I was growing up in Point Loma, that whole NTC or  Naval Training Center area was off limits to use civilians. I loved to look at the Navy training "ship" that you could see as you crossed over the canal on Harbor Drive as you entered the Point Loma area. It is great to see it all open and be able to explore Liberty Station. Now there are shops, restaurants, business and even schools in the old architecture which is quite charming.

We picked up lunch at Trader Joe's so we could have a healthy picnic at the park (the kids and I are making an effort to clean up what we eat), as I told them about much has changed since mommy was little. So funny, the tradition of sharing "what life was like when I was a kid". My son love to tease me about my life back in the olden days.

The park is spread out and has two different playgrounds, one for tots and the other for older ones.

Two unique features distinguish the park.
The large rock wall may make some moms nervous, but the kids see it as an obstacle waiting to be conquered.

The other great feature is the canal that runs along the park perfect for adding a little serenity to.

The playground area also has canvas sails to provide shade, sand and the rubber bouncy stuff that is fun to walk on and minimizes owies.

There was tons of grass to play games of badminton or soccer and throw balls for the dogs.

My middle at nine became a little board towards the end, but if we would have brought a ball, Frisbee or bike he would have been perfectly content.

Next to the canal and entwined in the grass were large sidewalks for people and bikes. Today since the main goal was to catch up with a friend we didn't see how far the trails take you, nor did we scout out all the military memorabilia that my son would love, but we are curious for next time.
