San Diego's East County:
Earth Day what are you doing with your CFLs?
I have been thinking for a while on another way to contribute to our community and help watch out for the environment. So I thought of the challenges I have in my own household. While I see the overall benefit of CFLs, compact florescent light bulbs, such as their longevity and the low amount of energy needed to power them. I am however concerned about their overall contribution to the environment due to the lead and other contaminants they contain. Because of these contaminants they cannot be disposed of in our regular trash, they need to be recycled in a special way. Many of us don't have time, nor understand the extra efforts it takes to dispose of these properly. To rectify this situation I am announcing our new plan to help make it easier to do to do our part to support the earth and its natural resources.
We are starting with helping you to dispose of and recycle your CFLs or compact florescent light bulbs. Did you know you can't put these into the trash can? If you do you are putting harmful contaminants into the landfills.
Once a month we will be collecting these CFLs so we can dispose of them properly so you don't have to. Please bring them to our office, 8148 La Mesa Blvd, 91942 on the first Tuesday of every month so that we can dispose of them for you. As an additional reward for your efforts we will have coffee and treats.
In addition to your CFLs we will also take any batteries, printer and toner cartridges that aren't supposed to go in the regular trash either.
To kick it off right we are also combining this month.s drop with May's Red Day Community Giveback. So please bring your recyclables, including CFLs, batteries and printer/toner cartridges and a food donation to our office at 8148 La Mesa Blvd, 91942 on May 1st. Please RSVP to me, Rachell by calling 619-316-7445 or email so we can make sure we have enough rewards to thank you for your contribution.
